Pony Pull

The Pony Pull is one of the more traditional events held at the Baraga County Fair, as it is deeply rooted in our agricultural heritage. Historically, farmers boasted about the strength of their teams. Eventually these boasts turned into friendly competitions to see which claims actually held merit. At the Fair, teams of well-matched ponies pull a heavy, weighted sled. These contests are a test of strength, training and handling. The team that successfully pulls the most weight over the designated distance is declared the winner!

Teams are divided into two different size classes. Each pull becomes more difficult as weights are added into the sled. This event showcases the pint-sized power contained in these smaller teams, while highlighting the deep, communicative bond they have with their handler and each other. Only teams that are perfectly in-sync will be able to achieve the heavier pulls. It's a fierce but friendly competition within the Pony Pull community. At the end of the day, some teams are able to move up to two to three times their own body weight!
